Importance and Prospects of Oil Palm Cultivation in the North-Eastern Region of India

Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis L.) is a high-yielding perennial crop with the potential to address India’s growing edible oil deficit, which currently necessitates heavy imports of about 9 million tonnes annually, costing nearly ₹40,000 crore. With yields of 4-5 t palm oil and 0.4-0.5 t palm kernel oil per hectare roughly five times higher than traditional oilseeds and an economic lifespan of 25-30 years, oil palm offers a promising pathway to enhance domestic production and farmer incomes. India’s North East Region (NER), characterized by abundant rainfall (2000-3000 mm), warm temperatures (25-30°C), and fertile loamy soils, presents vast untapped potential for oil palm expansion across nearly 963,000 ha. However, realizing this potential requires overcoming critical constraints, including inadequate infrastructure, limited processing mills, water management challenges, undulating terrain, and competition from other lucrative crops like rubber and arecanut. Sustainable oil palm cultivation hinges on appropriate land selection, soil conservation (minimal tillage, cover crops, contour ploughing), efficient water use (drip irrigation, mulching), and integrated pest and nutrient management. The National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), launched in 2021 with ₹5,850 crore allocation, provides policy backing through price assurance (Viability Price), enhanced input support (₹29,000/ha for planting material), and capital assistance for processing units. Private sector participation via MoUs with companies like Godrej Agrovet, Patanjali, and 3F Oil Palm further strengthens the value chain. While oil palm can generate steady year-round income, reduce jhum cultivation, and create rural employment, environmental concerns such as biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and water-table depletion demand careful planning. Grassroots micro-surveys, cluster-based development, intercropping during the juvenile phase, and biodiversity-friendly agroforestry systems are essential to balance productivity with ecological integrity. If implemented sustainably, oil palm can advance India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision in edible oils while uplifting NER’s agrarian economy.
