Abstract

The International Year of Millets (IYOM 2023) highlighted the health and environmental benefits of millets, aiming to revive their role in Indian agriculture. While awareness efforts gained traction, translating this into lasting improvements for farmers requires deeper efforts in technology, market systems, and consumer outreach. Despite a slight rise in cultivation area, a decline in yield—especially in 2024–25—points to the urgent need for improved agronomic practices and better seed access. India’s millet export sector expanded rapidly, with over 11,000 shipments and strong growth in exporter participation. Startup activity in the millet value chain has accelerated, and thousands of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) have been mobilized to boost value-added trade. However, gaps remain in consumption patterns, infrastructure, and resilience to climate risks. Going forward, targeted policies, research support, and improved farmer-market linkages will be key to ensuring millets continue to benefit rural communities and contribute to nutritional and agricultural sustainability.
