Abstract

Strawberry cultivation is gradually emerging as a promising high-value horticultural enterprise in Bihar's plains. Once considered mainly a temperate fruit crop, the strawberry can now be grown successfully during the winter season in suitable parts of the state through improved planting material, mulching, drip irrigation, protected cultivation practices and better crop management. Districts with favourable winter temperatures, access to urban markets, and progressive farmers have considerable potential to develop strawberry-based enterprises. The crop offers opportunities for income diversification, direct marketing, value addition and agri-tourism. However, its commercial success depends on reliable planting material, appropriate nutrient and pest management, cold-chain support, farmer training and organised market linkages. With coordinated support from research institutions, government agencies, farmer groups and private enterprises, strawberry cultivation can become an important component of climate-responsive and market-oriented horticulture in Bihar.
