Abstract

Fisheries and aquaculture are a very important source of food, income and jobs worldwide, but experience significant challenges in the form of disease outbreaks, climate change, environmental degradation and the volatility of market prices. Digital platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and specialised applications have arisen as cost-effective solutions to these difficulties, permitting speedy communication among fish farmers, fishermen, extension specialists, researchers, dealers, and consumers. The platforms allow for the exchange of technical knowledge, disease warnings, weather forecasts, market prices, sustainable production methods and enhancing market access and seafood traceability, supporting small-scale producers in the blue economy. However, issues like disinformation, unequal access to the internet, lack of digital literacy, privacy and commercialisation of farmers' data have to be taken into account. Therefore, social media should be used in addition to and not as a substitute for scientific advice and good fisheries governance. Digital platforms can significantly enhance fisheries management, foster sustainable aquaculture, and contribute to the sustainable development of the blue economy when used responsibly and inclusively.
