Abstract

The article emphasis on the potential hypoglycemic properties of guava leaves, focusing on the traditional uses, nutrient content, phytochemical compound and its health benefits. Psidium guajava, belonging to the Myrtaceous family, thrives in tropical and subtropical regions. This important tropical fruit finds widespread cultivation in countries like India, Indonesia, Syria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South America. Guava (Psidium guajava) leaves have been traditionally used for their excellent hypoglycemic property, including potential health benefits. It delves into the various constituents, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and other bioactive components which are believed to contribute to their glucose-lowering activity. Studies have shown that it inhibits the inhibition of carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes (like; alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase), enhanced insulin sensitivity, and potential effects on glucose uptake and metabolism. Also highlighted the hypoglycemic (blood sugar-lowering) properties of guava leaves, offering potential therapeutic benefits for the management of diabetes mellitus. The findings will contribute to a comprehensive compilation of guava leaves as a natural resource for managing blood sugar levels.
