Abstract

The growing demand for sustainable and efficient crop production has increased the need for rapid, reliable and real-time monitoring of crop health and environmental conditions. Biosensors are emerging as promising tools in modern agriculture by combining biological recognition elements with transducers and signal-processing systems to detect specific biological and chemical substances. This article highlights the basic structure and working principle of biosensors, including bioreceptors, transducers, amplifiers, processors and display units. Special emphasis is placed on nanobiosensors, which integrate nanotechnology with biological sensing to enhance detection sensitivity, signal generation and device miniaturisation. The working mechanism of nanobiosensors, from sample collection and target recognition to signal conversion, processing and data display, is discussed. Major categories, including enzyme-based, aptamer-based, electrochemical and optical nanobiosensors, are described along with their underlying principles and potential applications. Their emerging roles in early crop disease detection, nutrient assessment, plant stress monitoring, pesticide residue analysis, contaminant detection and precision agriculture are also explored. Furthermore, challenges related to field validation, sensor reliability, cost, calibration and environmental safety are highlighted. The integration of nanobiosensors with digital technologies and smart farming systems offers considerable potential for timely, data-driven crop management. Overall, advanced biological sensing represents a promising approach to transforming biological signals into actionable crop intelligence for more precise and sustainable agricultural production.
