Abstract

Hydroponics is an innovative soilless cultivation technology that offers new opportunities for sustainable horticultural production. The shrinking land resources, decline in soil quality and productivity, scarcity of water and sudden climate changes has paved the way to go for alternate sustainable system of production. Hydroponics involves growing plants using nutrient-enriched water, either directly or in combination with suitable growing substrates. Different systems, including nutrient film technique, deep water culture, drip hydroponics, ebb-and-flow systems, and aeroponics can be adapted to the requirements of various horticultural crops. Hydropomnics is being used for many horticultural crops such as leafy vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants and medicinal and aromatic plants. Its major advantages include precise nutrient delivery, efficient water use, no dependency on soil quality and opportunities for cultivation in urban areas where land resources is limited. The major challenges are the requirements for infrastructure, cost involved, lack of technical know how. The potential of hydroponics is immense and can lead to sustainable production and nutritional security with the cleaner crops.
