Precision Agriculture is also known as precision farming or Site-Specific Crop Management (SSCM) is a concept which dates back to 1920’s, with recognition of variations within fields in terms of soil fertility and crop yields. It is a smart farming approach to monitor and manage field variations by utilising modern techniques. This approach enhances farmers’ profitability by improving input use efficiency which in turn reduces production cost. In India it is recognised as key strategy for addressing many biotic and abiotic stress factors. During 2000’s importance of precision farming was achieved by initiatives of Indian Council of Agriculture Research and different State Agriculture Universities of India. Indian government initiatives like Digital Agriculture mission and Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchaye Yojana have accelerated its adoption by Indian farmers. The precision Agriculture enhances resource use efficiency by improving crop productivity and climate resilient farming which has potential to transform agriculture in India and contribute to sustainable food security and improve farmer livelihood.
